What are Dental Veneers?

A dental veneer is a customized, tooth-colored shell placed on the front surface of a tooth to enhance appearance. By bonding to the front of your teeth, veneers can effectively alter the color, shape, length, and size, resulting in a beautiful smile. Dental veneers also offer protection to the tooth’s surface. Overall, veneers are a great way to improve the aesthetic appeal of your smile. Two primary materials used for veneers are composite and dental porcelain.

What are the Types of Veneers?

  • Composite veneer – A composite veneer is a mixture of organic and inorganic materials. Veneers made of composite materials require less enamel removal and are less invasive. This type of veneer is easy to repair when impaired or cracked. Composite veneers look like your natural teeth, but they eventually get stained.
  • Porcelain Veneer Porcelain veneers are seamless, tooth-like, and match the color of your actual teeth. This type of veneer is safe for your gums and neighboring teeth. Veneers made of porcelain are less likely to crack, chip, or fracture and are stain resistant.

How do Teeth Veneers work?

There are 3 steps in the dental veneer process.

  1. Examination and planning. During the initial dental visit, the patient will have the opportunity to discuss any oral health concerns or cosmetic goals they may have. The dentist will examine the teeth carefully to determine if dental veneers are a suitable option. Furthermore, the dentist will provide a comprehensive explanation of potential cosmetic and corrective alternatives, as well as their associated costs, ensuring the patient is fully informed before making a decision.
  2. Preparation of the mouth and creation. The crucial phases of the dental veneer process will be covered during the second appointment.
  • Prepare the patient’s mouth. A thin layer of enamel will be removed during this stage to match the recommended thickness of the veneer. The patient may experience some pain in the gums when a small amount of enamel is removed. Discomfort may arise for the first few days until the area fully heals. Don’t worry, as you’ll be back to normal as the gums will start to recover swiftly. The dentist will fix any partially cracked teeth before securing the veneers.
  • Make an impression. After preparing the patient’s mouth, the dentist will begin making an impression. The impressions will be sent to the production lab. Following the dentist’s directives, the technician will make the veneer based on the chosen color and material. The entire process could take more than 10 days, which typically corresponds to the recovery of the gums. This makes it easier to fit the veneer into the patient’s teeth.

3. Application. All in all, the dental veneer procedure typically takes around 10 days to complete. Firstly, the patient’s teeth will undergo a thorough cleansing, polishing, and gentle roughening to ensure optimal adhesion of the veneers. Transparent adhesive is then used to attach the veneers securely to the teeth. In the case of discolored teeth, an opaque cement is applied before bonding the porcelain material. The veneer blends seamlessly with the color of adjacent teeth, creating a natural appearance. Once the application is successful, the patient will be asked to close their mouth, allowing the dentist to check if the top and lower teeth fit together appropriately and comfortably.
